Umbanda is much more than a set of rituals performed within the terreiro (religious house). It is a religion that teaches fundamental principles such as charity, faith, and respect for others. Being an Umbandist outside the terreiro means bringing these teachings into daily life, acting consistently with the values we learn from the spiritual guides and entities.
One of the main pillars of Umbanda is charity, which goes beyond material donations. It is about being willing to listen, offer emotional support, and be a positive presence in the lives of those around us. Outside the terreiro, this can manifest in small acts, such as helping a neighbor, practicing empathy in difficult situations, or simply being open to understanding others' struggles without judgment.
Another essential aspect is the pursuit of spiritual elevation and self-knowledge. Umbanda teaches us to care for our energetic and emotional balance. Outside the terreiro, this can mean setting aside moments in the day for meditation, prayer, or reflection on our actions. Additionally, practicing gratitude daily is a way to align ourselves with the positive vibrations that Umbanda values.
Finally, being an Umbandist outside the terreiro also involves cultivating respect for diversity and nature. The religion teaches us to value differences and understand that each person has their own path. Moreover, recognizing the importance of natural elements and caring for the environment are ways to honor the Orixás and spirituality.
Being an Umbandist in daily life means living the teachings of the religion in every choice and interaction. It is showing, through simple actions, that the light of the terreiro can also shine in our homes, workplaces, and relationships. After all, Umbanda is love, faith, and transformation.
