Incorporation in Umbanda: Demystifying Fears and Prejudices

Umbanda is a religion of welcoming, love, and connection with the sacred. However, many people who approach it carry doubts and fears, especially about incorporation. After all, what really happens in this moment? Do people lose control? And why is there so much prejudice surrounding it?

The Fear of Incorporation

Feeling fear or insecurity about incorporation is normal. Often, this stems from a lack of knowledge or negative experiences associated with the unknown. Unlike what is shown in movies or popular imagination, incorporation in Umbanda does not mean "losing consciousness" or being "possessed." On the contrary, it is a state of spiritual attunement where the medium, with preparation and guidance, becomes a channel for the manifestation of spiritual entities. It is a natural and respectful process that happens within each person’s limits.

The first step in overcoming this fear is gaining knowledge. Studying, talking to those who have experienced it, and trusting the terreiro where you are is essential. Spirituality always works within each person's right timing.

Myths That Keep People Away from Umbanda

Unfortunately, Umbanda still suffers from many myths and prejudices, especially because of its African roots. For decades, African-based beliefs have been persecuted and unfairly associated with negative things. This has generated fear and distanced many people who could benefit from the welcoming nature and light of this religion.

It is common to hear that Umbanda "does evil," that "those who incorporate lose their souls," or that "it is something demonic." These ideas stem from misinformation and religious racism, which must be challenged through dialogue and knowledge. Umbanda is a religion that cultivates love, charity, and respect for ancestry. Its rituals come from the wisdom of African, Indigenous, and European peoples, who brought valuable teachings about spirituality and balance.

The Path to Trust

If you are curious about Umbanda but still have doubts or fears, allow yourself to explore it without fear. Talk to trustworthy people, attend a ceremony, and feel the energy of the place. Spirituality does not impose—it invites.

Remember: fear dissolves with knowledge, and prejudice is fought with truth. Umbanda welcomes everyone with an open heart, ready to learn and evolve.
