Umbanda is a genuinely Brazilian religion that emerged in the early 20th century, combining elements from different spiritual and cultural traditions. Founded in 1908 by Zélio Fernandino de Moraes, in Rio de Janeiro, the religion united practices from spiritualism, Catholicism, Afro-Brazilian religions and indigenous traditions.
The first manifestation of Umbanda occurred during a spiritualist session, where Zélio embodied the spirit of Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, who declared the creation of a new religion. The proposal was to bring together people of different beliefs in a space of welcome, spirituality and connection with entities that represent archetypes such as caboclos, pretos-velhos and erês.
Umbanda values respect, charity and faith, and is practiced in temples where rituals, songs and offerings symbolize harmony between the material and the spiritual. Its plural essence reflects the cultural richness of Brazil, welcoming all people in search of help or self-knowledge.
