What is Receiving a Spiritual Pass in Umbanda? Understanding the Mediumistic Current and Energy Cleansing in the Terreiro

If you have ever visited an Umbanda temple (terreiro) or are taking your first steps in the religion, you have likely heard about the spiritual pass (passe espiritual). To an outside observer, the gesture of a medium extending their hands, snapping their fingers, or using elements like tobacco smoke and fresh herbs might seem mysterious. But what actually happens during this moment?

The spiritual pass is one of the most beautiful, simple, and profound sacraments in Umbanda. It is essentially a transfusion of spiritual, magnetic, and fluidic energies. It is not a magical trick, but rather a structured process of energetic cleansing, rebalancing, and harmonization of your subtle field.

How Does the Mechanics of the Pass Work?

Our physical body is enveloped by an energy field (the aura). In daily life—through stress, heavy thoughts, exhausting routines, and exposure to dense environments we accumulate energetic miasmas and spiritual debris. These dense energies attach to our field, causing fatigue, anxiety, and a heavy sensation on our shoulders.

During the pass, the spirit entity (whether a Caboclo, Preto Velho, Baiano, or Exu) works in unison with the medium to:

  1. Discharge (Descarrego): Remove the dense fluidic load and energetic blockages affecting your physical and spiritual well-being.

  2. Reorganize: Align the chakras and vital energy centers of the visitor.

  3. Energize: Infuse healthy fluids, vital force (axé), and lightness sent from the higher spiritual realm.

To achieve this, spirit entities often use natural energy condensers: tobacco smoke (which acts as a botanical element to burn off heavy loads), snapping fingers (which breaks up dense magnetic fields), and fresh herbs (which project vital grounding and healing properties).

The Fundamental Role of the Mediumistic Current

The pass you receive in the hall does not depend solely on the medium standing before you. It is sustained by something much larger: the Mediumistic Current (Corrente Mediúnica).

The current is the invisible web formed by the unity of all mediums in the terreiro, aligned in thought, faith, and discipline. When the mediums sing sacred chants (pontos), clap, and maintain an elevated mind, a powerful magnetic shield and field of force is created.

This current acts as a spiritual protective dome for the temple, allowing spirit entities to work safely, absorb dense energies brought in by visitors, and transmute everything into light. Without a firm and attuned mediumistic current, the spiritual pass loses much of its energetic backing.

How to Prepare Yourself to Receive a Pass

To fully absorb the benefits of a spiritual pass, your inner posture as a visitor is essential:

  • Keep an Open Mind: When standing or sitting before the entity, close your eyes and breathe deeply.

  • Cultivate Positive Thoughts: Elevate your mind in silent prayer, putting aside daily worries.

  • Maintain Reverence: The pass is an act of pure love and devotion. Approach it with respect and gratitude.

Remember: Umbanda never charges for spiritual passes or blessings. The pass is the pure expression of charity and the exchange of axé between the physical and spiritual worlds.
