Mediumship Development: Why It Is No Game

Once we understand that everyone possesses some degree of mediumship, as we explored in our last article, it is natural for curiosity or the desire to practice.

In Umbanda, the gateway for those who feel the calling to serve in the terreiro (spiritual house) is mediumship development. However, there is a golden rule that every Umbandist learns sooner or later: mediumship is serious business.

Mediumship development is not a "quick course," a pastime, or a shortcut to gaining privileges and easy answers to life. It is a profound process of commitment, personal transformation, and spiritual responsibility.

In this post, we will unpack what entering development truly means, the dangers of approaching this process lightly, and why discipline is the cornerstone of this journey.

What TRULY Happens During Development?

Many people assume that developing mediumship simply means "learning how to channel spirits". But channelling is merely the tip of the iceberg.

True development is a process of inner refinement. It is learning to:

  • Tame the ego: Discover where your own thoughts end and where the presence of the Guide begins.

  • Tune your frequency: Clear away the daily emotional noise to attune yourself to higher spiritual energies.

  • Study and cultivate discipline: Understand the doctrine, respect the sacred, and value the power of silence.

Before establishing a connection with a Guide, you must first learn to govern yourself.

The Dangers of Taking It Lightly

Mediumship works much like a radio antenna. When you approach the spiritual realm with sincere intentions and humility, you tune into frequencies of light. But what can happen when someone enters this path out of vanity or superficial curiosity?

  • Tuning into the wrong spiritual plane: Like attracts like. Confused or self-serving intentions attract trickster spirits.

  • The trap of the ego: Believing your Spirit Guide is "stronger" or that you are "special" is a direct path to spiritual delusion or subconscious performance.

  • Draining your own health: Handling spiritual energy without preparation, energetic protection, and proper spiritual discipline leads to physical exhaustion, severe mood swings, and emotional imbalance.

Why No One Develops Alone

You know that urge to try channelling alone at home? That is one of the biggest mistakes a beginner can make. Mediumship development requires the energetic foundation of a Terreiro and the guidance of a Spiritual Leader (Pai or Mãe de Santo). It is there that you find:

  • Energetic protection: A consecrated environment prepared so that unwanted energies cannot draw near.

  • Trained guidance: Experienced leaders who perceive what you cannot yet see and help correct the detours of the ego.

  • Collective strength: The shared energy of the spiritual group (corrente mediúnica) that sustains your journey..

The Commitment of Wearing White

Developing mediumship means saying "yes" to a quiet work of love and charity. There are no audiences, applause, or shortcuts. It requires patience with your own timeline, humility to learn, and discipline to respect the sacred.

When treated with proper reverence, mediumship is not a burden, it is one of the most beautiful opportunities for evolution and healing you will ever experience.
