The Umbandist's Journey: From the First Gira to Continuous Evolution
Every Umbandist remembers the day they set foot in a terreiro for the first time. The distinct scent of the defumação (herbal cleansing smoke), the sound of the atabaques (drums), the white ritual clothing, the strength of the hugs, and the emotion of hearing the first pontos cantados (sacred chants). It is an unforgettable moment, but it marks only the first step of a long journey.
Spiritual life within Umbanda is not a straight line, nor does it happen overnight. It is a living, continuously evolving journey, filled with phases, learnings, challenges, and growth.
In this post, we will walk through the stages that mark the Umbandist's evolution and understand how to keep the faith burning bright and our feet on the ground over the years.
1. The "Consulente" (spiritual seeker): Encounter and Welcome
Most people arrive at Umbanda seeking help: a pain in the soul, a life doubt, an illness, or an energetic imbalance. In this initial phase, the person is a "Consulente".
It is the moment to receive the passe (energetic cleanse), listen to the wise word of the Preto Velho, the descarrego (unburdening) of the Caboclo, and the joy of the Erê. Here, the person learns to trust the spiritual realm and feel the comfort of the terreiro. It is a phase of healing and awakening.
2. The Calling and the Beginning of Development
With time, the relief gives way to curiosity and the desire to serve. The person realizes they don't just want to receive charity, but also extend their hands to help others. The calling for mediumship development arises (which we explored last post).
Upon wearing the white ritual clothes and entering the spiritual vibrations, one's perspective changes:
You stop being merely an observer and start sustaining the house's energy.
You understand that discipline, spiritual retreats, and punctuality are forms of respect for the sacred.
The work of refining the ego begins, learning to step back so that spirituality can work.
3. Phases of Doubt and the Proof of Oscillation
Not everything on the spiritual path is easy. Every medium in development passes through phases of doubt: "Is it the entity or is it me?", "Why didn't I feel anything today?", "Why am I so tired?".
These moments of "dryness" or questioning are not setbacks, they are fundamental stages of spiritual maturation. The spiritual realm tests our constancy. True faith is not anchored in the enthusiasm of the early days, but in the ability to remain steadfast even when the body and mind waver.
4. Maturation and Quiet Work
As the years pass, the anxiety to "see, hear, and channel spirits" gives way to simplicity. The mature medium understands that:
The protagonist is charity: It doesn't matter who channelled the entity better or who gave the stronger passe. The focus is the pain of the person who came seeking help.
The terreiro is a school of community: One learns to live with the differences of their brothers and sisters, exercising patience and humility.
Umbanda happens outside the terreiro: The true test of evolution is how you treat your family, your colleagues at work, and your daily responsibilities.
Evolution Is Continuous
In Umbanda, no one "graduates" or knows everything. The oldest Pai or Mãe de Santo continues to learn every day from the simplicity of the entities and the lessons of life.
Walking in Umbanda is a daily commitment to your own transformation. It is understanding that the first gira opened the door, but it is your daily posture that builds your axé.
Axé!
